Kata Kunci : Flat Iron, Alopesia, Mahasiswi ABSTRACT Background: Physical friction or the use of chemicals or cosmetic tools can cause hair loss. Exposure to ultraviolet light, use of hair straightening tools or materials, traction, flat irons and small electric heaters can cause hair damage and hair loss to baldness (alopecia). Purpose: To find out the relationship between hair straighteners (flat irons) and the occurrence of alopecia in female students of the Faculty of Medicine, Islamic University of North Sumatra class of 2019. Methods: This research has a type of descriptive analytic research using a cross sectional design. The number of research samples was 71 respondents who were taken using the Total Sampling method and data were collected through questionnaires, univariate and bivariate analysis using the Contingency Coefficient (C). Results: Of the 71 samples, 34 (47.9%) used flat iron <2 times/week and did not experience hair loss, respondents used flat iron 2 times/week and experienced hair loss by 5 (7.0%) ) people, respondents who used flat iron 2 times/week and did not experience hair loss as many as 11 (15.5%) people and respondents who did not use flat iron did not experience hair loss as many as 21 (29.6%). Based on the results Contingency Coefficient test found p value = 0.000. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between the use of hair straighteners (flat irons) and the incidence of alopecia in female students at the Faculty of Medicine, Islamic University of North Sumatra, class of 2019.
