dc.description.abstract | ABSTRACT This research is concerned with the protagonist’s depression in Danielle Steel’s novel entitled Big Girl. The analysis focuses on the causes and the impacts of the protagonist’s depression. This thesis uses depression theory proposed by Munthe (2007) and Dewi (2014). This research adopts descriptive qualitative method. The finding shows that the causes of the protagonist’s depression come from her family pressure and the society which covered getting pressure from her father, lacking of self-esteem, getting unfair comparison and being rejected from the society. Meanwhile the effects of the depression found in the novel such as; 1) weighting loss, 2) sleeping disturbances, 3) feeling emptiness, and 4) trying to commit suicide.
