The Protagonist’s Life and Loss in Tere Liye's Novel “Hujan

Abstract

This thesis analyses the life journey and experience of loss experienced by the protagonist, in the novel ‘Hujan’ by Tere Liye. The novel tells the story of Lail's struggle to survive after losing her parents and Esok losing his brothers due to a devastating natural disaster in the form of a volcanic eruption and an earthquake. The research examines how the main character survives without loved ones after the devastation, and also goes through the emotionally difficult time of adapting to a new world. Through her relationship with Esok, a loving boy who rescues and supports Lail, the story explores themes of strength, friendship, and the emotional impact of tragedy. Through a qualitative analysis of the novel's narratives, dialogue, and descriptions, the results show a portrayal of the challenges of growing up in the midst of devastation, the grief of separation, and the search for meaning and hope in a world overwhelmed by loss. The analysis emphasises how personal loss shapes the protagonist's development and highlights the human life experience of grief and the process of recovery in the face of great adversity.
