GENDER EQUALITY THROUGH LIBERAL FEMINISM: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE PROTAGONIST IN ELIZABETH RUDNICK'S MULAN (2020)

Abstract

This research examines the character of Mulan’s in the movie script Mulan 2020 by Elizabeth Rudnick, which highlights the difficulties she faces in a patriarchal society. One of the gaps in this research is the lack of overall research on the representation of feminism in Mulan's story, especially in relation to patriarchal culture. A qualitative methodology was used with a descriptive research design, which allowed the researcher to examine the themes of feminism in the film. Analysis of the film script and observation of Mulan's characters were used as data collection techniques. This research uses liberal feminism as a theoretical framework, which underlines the importance of individual choice and the need for gender equality. The results show that Mulan motivates the people around her to change their perspective on women's abilities. The research conclusion is that Mulan's character embodies the broader struggle for gender equality in a patriarchal society, alongside her personal journey.
