Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to understand Cleopatra's motivation to fight against her brother in H. Rider Haggard's novel Cleopatra. The research explores the conflicts that occur in the novel, focusing on Cleopatra's motivations in her struggle against her brother, Ptolemy. It includes an in-depth analysis of conflict dynamics, characterization, and plot development associated with these conflicts. Factors such as political ambition, the desire to maintain power, and personal considerations will be examined to delve deeper into Cleopatra's character. The study employs motivation theory, particularly his hierarchy of needs, to identify and understand Cleopatra's motivations. This hierarchy includes physiological, safety, social, esteem, and self-actualization needs, all of which influence Cleopatra's actions and decisions within the narrative. Additionally, conflict theory is utilized to analyze how the conflict between Cleopatra and her brother develops and drives the storyline. The research adopts a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data is collected through in-depth text analysis, focusing on language expressions, dialogue, and character actions to identify Cleopatra's motivations. This analysis also considers the historical context of ancient Egypt and cultural aspects that may influence the characters' motivations.
