THE DIFFICULTY OF PRONOUNCING THE LETTER “R” ON INTERNATIONAL PHONETIC ALPHABET IN EIGHTH SEMESTER OF SMP ISLAM AN-NIZAM

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research aims to investigates the difficulty by students in pronouncing the letter ‘’r’’ in English words. this research was descriptive quantitative research, and the method of this research used pronunciation test to collect the data. The subject of this research was the eighth semester of SMP Islam An Nizam Medan. This thesis used simple random to take the sample, there were 15 samples from 30 students. The researcher recordsthe students’sound in reading text. The researcher found the difficulty made by the students in pronouncing the letter “r” in English Words. The persentage of students’difficulties in pronouncing the letter “r” in English words was 79 errors in each texts was Text 1, 21 or 26.5% , Text 2, 39 or 49.3% , and Text 3, 19 or 24%.
