dc.description.abstract | ABSTRACT This research examines the use of illocutionary speech acts in Taylor Jenkins Reid's novel "Malibu Rising." Utilizing a qualitative descriptive methodology, the study analyzes various types of illocutionary acts present in the novel, with a focus on directive and expressive acts. These speech acts are crucial in conveying characters' perspectives, advancing the plot, and revealing emotions. The research highlights the significant role of competitive and conflicting speech acts in character interactions, demonstrating how these acts contribute to the development of the narrative and the portrayal of social dynamics. The findings suggest that illocutionary acts in "Malibu Rising" serve to illustrate internal states, facilitate social interaction, and manage interpersonal relationships. The study provides insights into the pragmatic aspects of language in literature, offering a deeper understanding of how speech acts can reflect real-life communication and contribute to character development and storytelling. Future research could expand on these findings by exploring illocutionary acts in different literary genres and comparing their usage across various authors and themes.
