Abstract: ABSTACT The increasingly advanced progress of the manufacturing industry cannot be separated from welding because it has an important role in joining and repairing metals. Shielding Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) is a technique that is often used in welding, therefore to obtain welding results using the SMAW technique that meets welding standards you need to pay attention to several factors such as current, electrode and welding position. This research was carried out using tensile testing techniques. The material used in the research is Stainless 304 steel plate, the use of this material is because its applications can be used ranging from bolts, vehicle bodies to large construction. The aim of this research is to obtain parameters in the form of the distance between the material and the electrode which influences the welding process so that a product with better quality and strength is obtained. Based on the research results, the best welding results were obtained on 304 Stainless Steel material, namely with a distance of 0.5 mm and a current of 100 A, electrode type NSN 308. Furthermore, from the combination obtained, tensile testing was carried out, the tensile stress, yield and strain values were obtained which were not much different from the other variables, including (1 mm, 1.5 mm, 2 mm). Based on the results of the tensile test analysis, there are differences between welding parameter factors and tensile strength values. The conclusion of this research is that using a distance between the electrode and the material of 0.5 mm produces welding results with the highest tensile strength values with tensile stress values 652.11 𝑁 𝑚𝑚2 ⁄ , yield stress 854.29 𝑁 𝑚𝑚2 ⁄ and strain 27.61 %, therefore welding with an electrode and material distance of 0.5 mm is very effective for horizontal welding processes.
