Abstract: Thesis Title: DIRECTIVE, COMMISSIVE AND EXPRESSIVE SPEECH ACTS IN THE NOVEL ‘A PERFECT LIFE’ BY DANIELLE STEEL Abstract Blaise, a famous reporter, have been through a difficult time in her life, the trauma of a failed marriage, with a blind and depressed daughter Salima with the loss of her beloved nanny and the threat of competition at work, meanwhile sshe met a teacher, Simon, who is disappointed with his fake girlfriend and was also looking for love in his life, together they found the meaning of love and mutual acceptance of each other to get through life's problems. This article aims to explore Searle's directions , commisisve and expressive using Yule's theory (1996), which is carried out by Blaise and Simon, namely the process of living through problems with a traumatic background, resulting in giving up on the meaning of love and being pessimistic about the future. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. In this context, directive speech acts. The main character describes the speech acts of requesting, questioning, command, order, suggesting, inviting and commisive speech act with promising, threatening, refusing, offering, vowing, volunteering, then expressive speech act in his speech which means feelings of pleasure, pain, like, dislike, joys, sorrow an d apologize. The substance is seen from the discourse that leads to the meaning and consequences of the novel 'A Perfect Life' by Danielle Steel. The aim of this research is first to understand speech acts and types of speech acts. Second, as information about directive, commissive and expressive speech acts, namely the types of speech acts used by speakers to direct listeners to carry out certain actions. The results of this research found directive speech acts, namely: orders, commands, requests, suggestions, inviting then commissive namely promising, threatening, refusing, offering and expressive speech acts, namely: requesting, pain, likes, dislikes, joy and sorrow. The speech acts that are mainly produced by the dominant main character are directives; requesting & questioning and expressive dislike feelings of pain.
