Abstract: | Thesis Title: CONFLICT IN MARY SHELLEY’S NOVEL FRANKENSTEIN ABSTRACT Frankenstein, a novel written by Mary Shelley is about Frankenstein who creates a strange creature from the stolen limbs of the dead in his experiment. His curiosity of technology and science leads him asserting his scientific discoveries to create life. The conflict arises when he rejects the monster and leaves it in the laboratory. The monster, then, seeks revenge to avenge his own sorrow. The objectives of this study are to find out the types of internal and external conflicts faced by the protagonist, to analyse how the internal and external conflicts are revealed in the story, and to analyse how the negative impacts of internal and external conflicts are faced by the protagonist. Qualitative descriptive research is applied in this study because this research shows the nature of the situation as it exists at the time of the study. The results of the study show that the internal conflict is man versus self and the external conflicts cover man versus man, man versus society, man versus nature, man versus machine and man versus fate. These are caused by Frankenstein’ desire to struggle against God. But in the end, he gets miserable pain. The negative impacts found are change of character and behaviour, being unhealthy physically, mentally, and socially. Keywords: external conflict; internal conflict; negative impact |
