PROTAGONIST’S ANXIETY IN OSAMU DAZAI’S NOVEL NO LONGER HUMAN

Abstract

ABSTRACT The objective in doing this research is: 1) to find what kind of anxiety that experienced by the protagonist character in Osamu Dazai’s novel No Longer Human. 2) To reveal the factors causing anxiety experienced by the protagonist character. This research is using the qualitative description design and also supported by using analytical descriptive method as the issues are related to social matters and the action that taken by society members that impact the protagonist character. Anxiety is a negative emotion that marked by signs of tension, such as heartbeat racing, sweating, and difficulties of breathing that similar with fears. But, with less specific occurs, where fears came because of the threat that come immediately and anxiety is by an unpredictable causes. There’s normal anxiety and there’s anxiety disorders. Anxiety disorder is a psychological disorders that came by uncontrolled fears, that can disturb someone life. Freud’s theory of psychoanalysis and Savitri Ramaiah theory about anxiety is used by the writer to explain the anxiety and it factors causes that experienced by the protagonist character. The analysis and finding shows that the protagonist character are experience the three kind of anxiety that is, reality or objective anxiety, neurotic anxiety, and moral anxiety. The findings also shows that the factors that causes the anxiety that are also three kind that is, by the environment, by emotion that being repressed, and by the physical causes.
