Abstract: | ABSTRACT This research discusses conflict portrayed in Hamka’s novel Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck, aimed at conveying the causing factors of conflict and the negative impacts revealed in the novel. The issue tells a young man’s struggle spirit to win his love’s family to accept him though he has to suffer a lot for his love is rejected by them. Thus the rejection makes him undergo depression. Then he rises from diversity and begins a new chapter in his life by becoming a famous and successful author. He shows his loyalty and love in such an outstanding manner. He realizes that his lover suffers very much in the household life. Although his lover has belonged to another man, he keeps and continues loving her. His love continues blooming in the heart to the end of life and this is really the reflection of true love. There are several causing factors of conflict emerge in the novel such as rejection, mockery, love betrayal, love struggle, local norm, self-doubt, love, and self-crisis meanwhile the negative impacts revealed namely: fear, anxiety and depression over loss. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method proposed by Creswell (1994: 18). The result shows that all the causing factors and the negative impacts of the conflict revealed are found in the novel. Keywords: Conflict, causing factors, negative impacts |
