dc.description.abstract | POETIC UTTERANCES BY DALIHAN NA TOLU IN TOBA BATAK MARRIAGES IN JANGGA TORUAN VILLAGE Linarti manurung Thesis for fullfill Magister Program of English Department’s of English Literature 2023 ABSTRACT: The marriage of the Toba Batak community is closely related to the role of Dalihan Na Tolu is something that can not be separated from the Toba Batak custom, because Dalihan Na Tolu is a symbol of the social system of the Toba Batak people which also has three pillars consisiting of Hula- hula, Dongan tubu, and Boru. The function of Dalihan Na Tolu besides assisting staff, also plays a role in assisting in materials for carrying out traditional Toba Batak marriage ceremonies. The purpose of this research is to describe the implementation of speech acts in the marriages of the Toba Batak indigenous people and also to describe the types of speech acts in Toba batak marriages. In this case, the theory of speech acts was introduced by J.L.Austin and then developed by J.R.Searle. The technique used is descriptive qualitative method, namely informal data analysis techniques with community leaders in the village of Jangga toruan, lumban Julu District. The findings of this study are 4 speech acts as stated by Searle, namely : 1). Representative speech acts, 2). Expressive speech acts, 3). Directive speech acts, 4). Declarative speech acts. In addition to the data on the implementation of speech acts in Toba Batak marriage customs. There are 3 speech acts that take place as one as proposed by Austin and Searle, namely: 1). Locutionary speech acts, 2). Illocutionary speech acts, 3). Perlocutionary speech acts. The writer focused to discuss in Illocutionary and poetic utterance in Toba Batak marriages in Jangga Toruan village.
