T This research is entitled Protagonist's Anxiety in John Green Novel The Fault in Our Star. This study aims to reveal the type of anxiety experienced by the protagonist and her defense mechanism to against the anxiety. The causes of anxiety can be seen for the first time appearing when Hazel is diagnosed with thyroid cancer. At that time, she is always in the process of healing because the pain she feels increases her anxiety to die. That situation results in a big impact on the people around her especially her parents and boyfriend. They get worried that she would hurt the people around her. This thesis uses the psychoanalysis theory of Sigmund Freud to explain the protagonist’s type of anxiety and her defense mechanisms to get rid of the anxiety. In completing the analysis, this study uses qualitative research methods because the data collected in this study is in the form of words as quotations taken from the source. The results of this study indicate that the first protsgonist’s anxiety is due to feeling guilty as well as overthinking and the second is anxiety to keep anticipating for the future. Therefore, two types of anxiety can be found in the novel. They are moral and realistic anxiety. Then, the protagonist commits two defense mechanisms to avoid her anxiety. They are rasionalization and reaction formation. Finally, those data proves that the protagonist in the novel suffers from anxiety and she tries hard to cure the disease.
