THE INFLUENCE OF CONFLICTS IN RADHAR PANCA DAHANA’S NOVEL GANJAR DAN GUA SI LEUNGLI

Abstract

Abstract Conflict causes people to have their character developed. It is normal since people’s characteristics always change as they never stop growing up to be mature and wiser at facing conflicts in their real life. This study comes from a novel entitled Ganjar dan Gua si Leungli written by a famous novelist, Radhar Panca Dahana. The novel was first published in 1982; and this novel has been sold in so many countries as a fantasy novel. There are three objectives of this study. The first objective is to show the depiction of the main characters; Ganjar dan Gua si Leungli character development. The second objective is to show the conflicts that are faced by Ganjar dan Gua si Leungli from the novel. The last but not least is to show how the conflicts influence Ganjar dan Gua si Leungli character development. Three theories of theory of character and characterization, theory ofconflict, and theory of character development is included in order to conduct this study better. Since this study is a library research, the printed materials and internet sources are compiled. The main approach that the writer uses in this studyis the formalist approach. At the final of this study it is found out, each of Ganjar dan Gua si Leungli are faced two internal conflicts; Ganjar vs. herself (timid) and Ganjar vs.her strong will to prevent the other nine giants’ plan to eat children downtown; since Ganjar has been kidnapped by Gua si Leungli, they both becomes good friends in which every conflict that they face is become their one constituent. Gua si Leungli internal conflicts are his cowardly characteristic and his dilemma (of helping Sophie, whether he shall tell the Queen about the other giants’ plan by using the mixing dreams and to meet people) vs. himself. The way they response those conflicts shows they develop their characteristic for the better of the worse (Hurlock: 1974). Thus, the conflicts influence their character development.
