Abstract: CONFLICT IN FRANK HERBERT’S NOVEL DUNE Abstract Kinds and causes of conflict in Frank Herbert’s best-selling 1965 novel Dune are analysed as well as how the protagonist resolves said conflicts. The aims are to analyse both internal and external conflict as well as the major causes of those conflicts and the methods that the protagonist uses to resolve the conflicts. Psychology of literature approach is applied in this research since its aspect of analysis is through the emotions of the characters supported by behaviourism theory to analyse the two kinds of conflict proposed by Robert Stanton as well as various theories or concepts related to the study and identification of conflict such as those proposed by Lewis Coser and William Kenney. Qualitative descriptive method is applied in this research to understand the exposition of social phenomena. The results show that the protagonist experiences external conflicts caused by conflicting goals and his approach to resolve the conflicts categorised into the assertive style. Keywords: Behaviourism, conflicts, external conflict, conflict resolution, assertive style.
