ABSTRACT Background : Smartphone is a type of mobile phone with higher features than a computer. Smartphones emit electromagnetic radiation with a maximum power of about 0.6 to 1 watt. Smartphones produce light, namely blue light, which can be seen by the human eye. Therefore blue light can affect the eyes. Using a smartphone at a young age can be a risk factor for damage to the optic nerve due to excessive exposure to smartphone light. Based on the results of a survey conducted on UISU FK students class of 2019, it was found that all UISU FK students class of 2019 have smartphones and the duration of smartphone use is quite dominant. During the Covid-19 pandemic, there was a change in the increase in playing smartphones. This change is caused by online learning activities for 4-5 hours or more. The increasing number of students using smartphones makes it possible to stare at the smartphone screen for a long time regardless of the impact that will occur on their health, especially eye health. Visual disturbances can occur, one of which is due to playing a smartphone for a long time. Objective : To analyze the relationship between playing smartphone duration and visual impairment in UISU Faculty of Medicine students class of 2019. Methods : This research is an analytic research in which this study looks for the relationship between playing smartphone duration and visual disturbances in UISU Faculty of Medicine students class of 2019 in 89 students with a cross-sectional research design. Sampling method using simple random side. The instruments used were questionnaires and snalllen charts. Data analysis techniques using somer'd correlation test. Results : Based on the results of the correlation test with the Somers'd test on left eye vision, the results obtained were p = 0.008 and r = 0.281. In the right eye vision, the results obtained were p = 0.004 and the value of r = 0.278, which means that there is a relationship between the length of time playing a smartphone and visual disturbances. Conclusion : There is a relationship between playing smartphone duration and visual disturbances in UISU FK students class of 2019. Keywords : Length of Playing Smartphone, Vision, Students.en_US
