Abstract: ABSTRACT
This research aimed at the protagonist’s suffering in Dennis Bock’s novel
The Ash Garden based on Quilao’s theory. The main purpose of this
study is to know what the kinds of suffering are and how the protagonist
overcome it. Suffering is one of many phases in life that one can
experience in order to become stronger. Suffering is meant to become a
concern that by not neglecting this, many lives can be saved. Sufferers
should focus on how to overcome the suffering. There are five kinds of
suffering based on Quilao’s theory. This study uses descriptive
qualitative method to show what kinds of suffering are there in human
life. Based on the research, the subject of this study is Emiko Amai.
Protagonist is the main character lived in suffering and lost her family
due to war. She suffers mentally and physically. In this novel, she
attempts to continue her life.

Abstract: ABSTRACT
An identity crisis is a social phenomenon that can occur at any time
to individuals in society. Therefore, this study discusses the
Protagonist's Identity Crisis in Paul Kalanithi's novel When
Breath Becomes Air. The purpose of this research is to identify and
explain the types of identity crisis faced by the protagonist in Paul
Kalanithi's novel When Breath Becomes Air. The researcher uses
the identity crisis theory proposed by Erik Erikson (1993) and
Baumeister, et.al (1985). The researcher used a descriptive
qualitative analysis as a method to describe and analyze the novel.
The following are the results of this research: 1) The discussion of
the motivation crisis Paul faced is explained in three sub-chapters,
namely the causes, subjective experience, and behavior. 2) The
cause of the motivation crisis experienced by Paul Kalanithi is the
result of his illness, namely liver cancer. 3) Paul experienced a
series of subjective experiences, namely a). vacillating commitment
and confusion about the value, b). regulars of vaguness, c).
emptiness and self-unconsciousness, and d). anxiety. 4) Several
behaviors that appear from Paul, i.e, a). comparing the activities he
did when he was a doctor and a patient, b). looking at the world
from two perspectives, namely hope and death, and c). feeling
hopeless because his dreams, hard work and life choices are

Abstract: ABSTRACT
This research aimed at protagonist basic needs in Jojo Moyes Novel Me
Before You based on Maslow’s theory. The main purpose of this study
is to know what are basic needs in human life. Basic needs is the
elements needed by human being in maintaining life and health. There
are five of needs based on Maslow’s theory, but this study only focuses
in two the most basic needs, such as physiological needs and safety
needs. This study uses descriptive qualitative method because explain
what are the parts of basic needs in human life from the most important
to be fulfilled and continue to other needs. Based on the research, the
subject of this study is Louisa Clark as a protagonist in the novel. The
protagonist is the breadwinner in the family so that the most important
basic needs must be fulfilled in order to carry out activities, and
continue life.

Abstract: ABSTRACT
This study is entitled Cause and Effect of The Protagonist’s
Anxiety Disorder in Sophie Kinsella’s Finding Audrey. This
research aimed to find out about the way the anxiety disorder
is portrayed and the causes and the effects of the protagonist’s
anxiety disorder. This thesis uses psychoanalysis theories by
Sigmund Freud (1964) as the form of psychology and
literature. In completing the analysis, the study uses a
descriptive method by Creswell (2012: 274) which represents
the data based on the facts stated in the novel. The data of this
study is obtained from the novel Finding Audrey by Sophie
Kinsella. The findings showed that there were data of anxiety
disorder portrayed in the novel, the causes of anxiety disorder
that portrayed in the novel which are threat, fear and response,
the effects of anxiety disorder that portrayed in the novel
which are the uses of sunglasses to avoid eye contact, getting
out from school and being afraid out of home. Keyword:
